U.S. To Expand Semiconductor Export Controls

The U.S. Commerce Department is planning to expand its ban on U.S. shipments to China of semiconductors used for artificial intelligence and chipmaking tools, according to a Reuters report.

The new regulation, expected to come in October, codifies restrictions communicated to KLA Corp, Lam Research Corp, and Applied Materials Inc.—three U.S. companies involved in the research, design, and manufacturing of semiconductors. These restrictions require the three companies to obtain licenses from the Commerce Department prior to exporting chipmaking equipment to Chinese factories that produce advanced semiconductors with sub-14 nanometre processes. Similar restrictions have also been communicated to Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices.
