Firms of the Year
Country and Regional Firms of the Year

China's legal elite gathered on September 13 at the Park Hyatt in Beijing for the China Law & Practice Awards. The ceremony celebrated deals, teams and firms that strived for innovation and excellence in their work.

Now in its seventh year, the bilingual awards ceremony has grown from a few deal categories and a panel of specialists to a comprehensive event researched by CLP's editorial team that accurately represents the market and recognises the country's finest legal minds.

The night began with deals of the year, which all share common themes: they were extremely complex, legally challenging and utilised precedent-setting structures. Kevin Lu from Synmax Translation presented the award for M&A deal of the year – Youku and Tudou merger via stock swap.

The finalist teams of the year all demonstrated continued excellence and a strong ability to work on multiple groundbreaking deals in each category. Kirkland & Ellis took home international private equity team of the year, with strong mandates including representing Bain Capital in their privatisation of China Fire & Security.

The firms of the year recognise non-transactional areas. International and domestic firms both showed their abilities to deliver complex legal advice in areas from tax to labour and employment. Rob Morris from Alix Partners presented Han Kun Law Offices with the up-and-coming firm of the year award.

The country and regional firms of the year recognise China's close relations with its neighbouring countries and emphasise the importance of China's regions as investors move inwards.

Selecting finalists and ultimate winners was a rigorous process that took over four months to complete. Many hours were dedicated to looking over firm submissions and interviews with private practice lawyers, in-house counsel and other industry participants.

The editorial team would like to congratulate all of the winners and finalists of the 2012 China Law & Practice Awards. We look forward to following your achievements over the next 12 months.
