ZTE and IBM give patent advice

Speaking at the Beijing International IP Forum last week, ZTE's Shen Jianfeng and IBM's Liu Xiaoyu highlighted the important roles of their ever-expanding patent portfolios

Shen, director of ZTE's IP department, argued at the forum that patents are tools the telecoms giant uses to break into new markets. They are not only a means to enter and compete, but also display the company's reputation to potential customers.ZTE

ZTE's patent portfolio introduces these customers to the company's technical knowledge and ability to deal with their problems. A strong international portfolio is a sign of the company's capabilities, added Shen.

Liu Xiaoyu, IP manager at IBM, one of the world's largest patent filers, said there are a number of advantages to having a broad patent portfolio and it is an integral part of the company's long-term strategy.

IBMFor IBM, their patent portfolio helps them maintain their competitive advantage and licensing can be a good source of revenue. Flexibility is also essential to managing accidental infringement and entering into cross-licensing agreements, which larger portfolios provide.

As China's companies expand their global presence, it will be essential for them to manage and create strategies for their patent portfolios.
