clpstaff &clp articlesSpeaking at the Beijing International IP Forum last week, ZTE's Shen Jianfeng and IBM's Liu Xiaoyu highlighted the important roles of their ever-expanding patent portfolios
Shen, director of ZTE's IP department, argued at the forum that patents are tools the telecoms giant uses to break into new markets. They are not only a means to enter and compete, but also display the company's reputation to potential customers.
ZTE's patent portfolio introduces these customers to the company's technical knowledge and ability to deal with their problems. A strong international portfolio is a sign of the company's capabilities, added Shen.
Liu Xiaoyu, IP manager at IBM, one of the world's largest patent filers, said there are a number of advantages to having a broad patent portfolio and it is an integral part of the company's long-term strategy.
