As the world looks to China for a way out of recession, the list of Finalists for the 2009 China Law & Practice Awards shows the value of innovative, high-quality legal advice

After 12 tumultuous months, the 2009 China Law & Practice Awards is your profession's opportunity to sit back, raise a glass, and celebrate the outstanding achievement of your peers.

The prestigious third annual awards ceremony, hosted by China's most trusted legal resource and held at the JW Marriott Hotel, Shanghai, on September 23, is fast building a reputation for integrity and style. In addition to its strong focus on transactional achievements, this year's China Law & Practice Awards introduces a number of additional categories – making its annual flagship event even more inclusive for the domestic and international legal professions.

This year there are: seven Deal categories; eight Team categories and two In-house categories; nine city Firm categories; and eight Firm categories. [Click these links to read details of the nominated deals and firms.]

Despite the incredibly challenging trading conditions, the list of Finalists reveals that China's finest legal minds have risen to meet that challenge head on. The shortlist of deals, for example, includes many transactions that incorporate original, progressive legal structures, or that pioneer new legislation. Methodology

Celebrating innovation, complexity and market impact, the China Law & Practice Awards employs a rigorous research methodology. The selection of Finalists is based on the extent to which their work has influenced the legal market and benefited the quality and development of China's legal landscape. The choice of Winners will be based on the extent to which work has blazed a trail: perhaps by incorporating original, progressive legal structures, or by pioneering new legislation.

Law firms were approached earlier this year for submissions covering their work in China over the last 12 months. Only deals that include a significant China element to them and which have closed between July 1 2008 and June 30 2009 are eligible for inclusion. Confidential transactions and those that did not complete were not reviewed.

The subsequent shortlist is the result of four months of independent research, which included many interviews with corporate counsel and lawyers in private practice.

China Law & Practice would like to thank every law firm and client that invested time and effort in this process, either by collating and submitting evidence of their achievements or by sparing time to speak with our researchers. And of course we would like to offer our congratulations to the Finalists and Winners of the 2009 China Law & Practice Awards.
