How do the Leading Lawyer nominations reflect the evolution of the legal system in China? China Law & Practice takes a closer look at the results, and speaks to the nominees about their areas of expertise. Hear from the experts what the future holds for China law.

THE NUMBERS

Over 180 individuals in 14 different practice areas were named Leading Lawyers in the China section of Asialaw's Leading Lawyers 2008. Four categories appeared for the first time (Islamic Finance, Insurance / Reinsurance, Regulatory & Government, and Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy), and several others saw significant increases from the 2007 results – the Securitization & Structured Finance category had one Leading Lawyer nomination in 2007, and 10 in 2008. Similarly the Construction, Property & Real Estate category leapt from 2 to 11, and Corporate Governance from 1 to 7. 2008 saw 12 more lawyers from international firms nominated – several in more than one category.

Two of the categories with the most Leading Lawyers (in both this year and last year) were Mergers & Acquisitions and Intellectual Property – M&A and IP have both almost doubled in the number of Leading Lawyers since 2007.
