Main contents: The Circular requires the registration of certain words as website names to be approved by an appropriate level of government. These words include the names of China (or similar phrases such as "hong hua" or any county or larger administrative areas of China, general names of industries or products, and names or abbreviations of major historical and cultural sites under provincial-level protection or natural reserves or wild animal reserves under State-level protection (Articles 1 to 7). If the name of a foreign country (or region) or well-known foreign city is to be registered as a website name, the applicant shall provide the approval document from a corresponding level government of that country (Article 8). If an approval document in respect of a website name is revoked, the website registration authority shall also revoke that website name (Article 11).
